Foam and Insulation Tulsa | A Different Make Up
Hello, my name is Seth Blackwell and I’m going to take an opportunity to address a frequently asked question that we get in the field a lot on what is the difference between open and closed cell spray foam? Um, they do, they are very different in their chemical makeup there. Um, there’s gonna be some projects that are definitely going to go open cell and some projects are that are definitely going to be only close sale. There’s also projects to where I’m both products supply, Foam and Insulation Tulsa, depending on what your need is in your particular construction project. Uh, the, the best way to explain the difference of each foam is to kind of explain some of the characteristics of the phone. The open cell foam is a primarily used in residential housing. It is an open cell structure, which just means that the inside density of the foam incorporates polyurethane foam and also air which creates a tiny little cells of air.
That’s part of what gives it its r value per inch. Now, one thing, one characteristic about open cell, and it’s commonly called soft phone with it, has a internal density of a half pound, which means that there’s quite a bit more air than there is plastic and that makes it very soft and porous like a sponge. So if you were going to take your finger and poke through an open sale, you would have no issues doing that. You would be able to poke your finger right through it or terrorist small piece off. I’m also, Foam and Insulation Tulsa with it being soft, it works very well for sound control. This is a product that we install and a lot of a roof lines and a residential houses. It makes it very quiet. We do this and a lot of exterior walls and the residential houses, we do spray a open cell in a metal buildings and barns, but it definitely has to be, um, kind of planned for the open cell because of how soft and fragile it is.
The, uh, one of the benefits of open cells, it’s usually a little more cost friendly. Uh, it’s yield is quite a bit more because it’s using poly and air. And itself structure, you get a lot more out of the same set of foam. Each set of foam has an a and B component. Um, they, they work together at a one to one ratio. So basically it’s called the yield of the foam. It’s just how much coverage you get out of that set. So the difference between open sell and close sale, the close cell, just like in what is it sounds, Foam and Insulation Tulsa is a closed cell structure. It is a basically all Paul your thing, they vary in their internal density from one point six to two point two, they even have a three pound for pound and a 10 pound a closed cell phone to where that’s what they do foundation repairs with is the 10 pound phone and primarily three to four pounds is, um, for your roofing phone.
And then the two pound, one point five to two pounds a closed cell foam is what we use the most. Foam and Insulation Tulsa, this is a product because as a closed cell structure and it does not have the same effect of, of a sponge, this is something that we would use in a somewhere where we’re trying to control moisture, vapor control, like a crawl space under a house and residential. We also spray this around perimeters the slabs around a perimeter, new construction for slab insulation. This is a product that can be kind of left in a little more where the open cell needs to be inside the house. This is something that can be left outside of the house as long as it’s out of direct sunlight. This, if we have a, a metal building and they’re wanting to do spray foam and they are not planning on covering those walls with any sort of Osb, more corrugated metal or some sort of rocker panel.
This is a measure that we would use on the walls just to make sure that the walls are protected. We will put in that that higher density product which is going to set up a lot firmer than the open cell and it’s going to be in a better position of being exposed through the life of the foam to where it’s not going to be damaged by the occupants that are either in the building or uh, you know, just kinda in general, it’s going to be a tougher material. I’m one of the things about closed cells, it’s kind of a, a negative is it’s yield because it is a closed cell structure and that it is only a, Foam and Insulation Tulsa incorporates the a year thing. We don’t get near as much square footage out of a set of foam. The same set as like open sell it, it’s about a thousand pounds 500 on the Aa side, $500 on the, on the b side.
And that’s going to produce about a quarter of the foam compared to the open cell. So that’s really, you know, the material really drives the cost on the open cell, but there are definitely specific situations where we have to use a closed cell and we don’t get the option of using the open cell. And a couple of these are anytime that we’re under a house for vapor control has to be closed. Cell Foam, open cell does not have any vapor control qualities about it, um, to where the closed cell at one inch is, is a vapor barrier. Um, couple of similarities between the two is that each of them do become a barrier. Air Barrier, the, Foam and Insulation Tulsa, the open cell reaches that at two and a half inches and the closed cell reaches that at half inch. And whenever I say air barrier, I mean air impermeable, it will not allow any air transfer through either one of these products. So both of these products are air barriers, um, and one of the products is, is a, uh, a vapor barrier. So, um.
